Seven Nights of Darkness Meditation – An Ancient Essene Practice Jan 12-18 Online & In-Person
What is Darkness Meditation? We have presented this meditation since 2005. Each year people have come to meditate in the complete darkness – some for one or two times and many for the entire week. We will present the meditation both online and in person.
This ancient meditation technique was given by the Mystic Shiva to his Beloved Shakti. It has also been practiced in other schools of meditation. It is a meditation where you stare with open eyes into the darkness.
Why do we offer the Meditation? The absence of light can be a primal source of relaxation and inner nourishment.
If you come to the Center please make sure you are feeling 100% well as the room has less ventilation since there is foam inserted in the windows and cloths hanging to make the room completely dark.
How do we do it? The Schedule –
- From 7pm – 7:15 pm we will Dance. This will help us move from the mind into the body as preparation for sitting in the Darkness.
- 7:15 pm Each of us will move into the space that has been prepared for the darkness meditation. If you are doing this online bring the device you have zoom on near to the place you will go to sit in the darkness – so you can hear the instructions and a variety of Quotes we read each night helping us to dive deeper into the darkness.
- 7:20 pm – 8:30 pm We will go over the instructions and read a quote on meditating in the darkness. Then we will all turn off our lights and begin the meditation of staring into the darkness. The eyes will remain open the whole time while you sit in the darkness. The spine should be straight – you can sit on a chair so you are comfortable – keeping the spine straight helps keep alert and awake.
- Afterwards, at your own time come upstairs to hang out or open your zoom camera and we can just hang out together for awhile.
- If you attend online here are some suggestions for creating your own space for the Darkness Meditation.
- It’s good if you have time, to set up and practice before the first day of the darkness meditation begins.
- Bathrooms without windows are easy to set up. To see if it will work for you, turn off all the lights in your house or apartment. Close the door of the bathroom and put a towel at the bottom of the door. This usually makes a perfect dark room space. Of course you will have to use your own creativity where you will sit. It should be a place that can get wifi so that you can bring your zoom computer or phone in – or that you can set outside the door making sure that you can hear us read an introduction to the meditation and also an insightful quote about the benefits of sitting with eyes open staring into the darkness.
- Window can work if you can cover the window with foam, styrofoam cut to fit the window or a curtain or shade that will black out the space.
- You can use Eye Masks. We bought Manta Sleep Masks from Amazon. They are100% Blackout Eye Mask – Zero Eye Pressure – Adjustable Eye Cups.
- Some people do the darkness meditation session with a quilt or blanket over the head and found it worked perfectly.
- Also you can pull the shades/curtains. And cover your head with something that makes the room totally dark and that you can still breath.
