Talking to Nature-a Heart & Soul Meditation-(Online)
What is Talking to Nature Meditation? In this process, we will sit with a plant, flower or tree and allow ourselves to speak whatsoever we want to say. We will also give space for the plant, flower or tree to answer us back. This process will take 30 minutes, to allow our deep unconscious time to surface and express itself and to allow time for the connection between you and the plant or tree to grow. Then we will just sit near the plant, flower or tree and be still.
Why do we offer this meditation? I found this meditation to be very helpful so I wanted to share it. There are many meditations that assists us in slowing down and connecting deeply with nature. At first this might seem odd, but once you start, at least from my experience, you will begin to appreciate and value your place in nature and how it can be of assistance to you. We first learned about this process from a Darshan Diary where the Mystic Osho is giving this process to a woman. Unfortunately I do not know the exact name of the Darshan Diary this was taken from.
How we do it?
- Sit beside a tree or a plant, and just talk loudly, a dialogue. (This may seem ridiculous in the beginning!) If you do this meditation inside, you can arrange to have indoor plant near you.
- Have a little dialogue with the plant or tree. Forget everybody. Only this being is here, so whatsoever you feel, talk to it.
- You can answer from the plant’s or tree’s side. You just go into it. After you have said something to the plant, then you say something from the plant’s side! Get in tune with it because it does have to answer you!
- Have a conversation with the plant or tree for 30 minutes. Then sit quietly for 15 – 30 minutes. We will take 30 minutes to let everything settle.
Here is the exact dialogue between Osho and a disciple as recorded.
Osho is talking to someone in a darshan, offering the plant meditation:
Osho: “… If you are sitting beside a tree or a plant, just talk loudly, a dialogue. That too will be ridiculous in the beginning….[Osho arranges for a small pot plant to be put in front of her.]
Have a little dialogue with the plant. Forget everybody. Only this being is here, so whatsoever you feel, talk to it. You can even answer from his side. You just go into it.
The Woman: [She turns her eyes to the plant in front of her, saying hesitantly: You and I are nature and we are the same. I have seen more beautiful plants…but that’s the way you are…]
Osho: Now! From the plants side say something! Just get in tune with it because the plant has to answer you.
The Woman repeating what she hears the plant say: [She looks at the plant for a second or two, then says: I think you have much to learn, but I hope it will come one day.]
Osho: Right, very good. And the plant answered you well! Mm! It answered you well. That’s exactly what the plant wanted to say. And the thing that you have to learn is not to compare. That’s what it wanted to say that you don’t say, ‘I have seen more beautiful plants than you,’ because that is hurtful.
And comparison is meaningless because everything is unique. Comparison is of the mind: when the thought enters and the feeling is lost. That’s what the plant told you immediately, and it told you through your unconscious because your unconscious can also feel it — that you have brought comparison in and it is ugly.
[She says: You have to accept everything.]
Osho: Yes. Not only accept, you have to love…”
This is part of the Heart and Soul series, each Wednesday we will present a Meditation from the numerous meditation traditions Osho has given us. We want to share and pass on as many of these as possible. Often when Shanti (one of the meditation facilitators of The World of Meditation) would meet with Osho in a darshan, he would introduce to her a meditation technique, asking her to try it out. Her love for experimenting with a variety of techniques continues even to this day.
Each session we will introduce the particular meditation presented. Then we will all do the meditation. There is always time before and after each meditation to ask questions and to just hang out with each other!
