What is the Osho Kundalini Meditation? The Osho Kundalini Meditation is an active meditation, that first helps release the mind/body anxiety and stress, creating a space for the movement of life energy throughout the body! This results in relaxation and inner quietness. It consists of four stages of 15 minutes: 1) Loosening the body’s inner rigid structures with shaking; 2) Free style dance/movement, for moving the body’s energy; 3) Sitting or standing silently with eyes closed, allowing energy to rise; and, 4) Deeply relaxing in stillness.
Why do we offer this meditation? “When you are doing the Chaotic Meditation or the Kundalini or the Nadabrahma, these are not really meditations, you are just getting in tune. If you have seen them, it is like Indian classical musicians playing. For half an hour, or sometimes even more, they simply go on fixing their instruments. They will move the knobs, they will make the strings tight or loose, and the drum player will go on checking his drum – whether it is perfect or not. For half an hour they go on doing this. This is not music, this is just preparation. Active meditation is not really the meditation, it is just preparation. You are preparing your instrument. When it is ready, then you stand or sit in silence. Then meditation starts. Then you are utterly there. You have woken yourself up by jumping, by dancing, by breathing, by shouting — these are all devices to make you a little more alert than you ordinarily are. Once you are alert, then the waiting. Waiting is meditation — waiting with full awareness. And then it comes, it descends on you, it surrounds you, it plays around you, it dances around you, it cleanses you, it purifies you, it transforms you.” Osho.
How we do it: “This meditation is a pathway to life – your energy from the first chakra or the sex center to the last, or the crown chakra. That is why for the first fifteen minutes of this meditation, you shake your body. The purpose of shaking is that whatever energy is lying suppressed or dormant anywhere melts; wherever it is lying stuck or blocked, it starts flowing from there. If you shake your body rightly and wholeheartedly for these fifteen minutes, all suppressed energy will be activated and will start flowing.
Then in the second stage is dancing. The purpose of dancing is that the energy that has now spread all over you can transform into bliss and you dance as if you are celebrating, as if some great phenomenon has taken place, as if a light has descended in your life. So dance blissfully, because the more blissful you are the more your energy rises up, and the more energy rises up, the more blissful you become.
So if you become ecstatic and start dancing, as if you have drunk the whole tavern… A lukewarm dance, a miser’s dance won’t do! A lukewarm effort will not help. It needs intensity. One is dancing as if one has gone mad.
When the energy is flowing and you are soaked with bliss,
then stand still, or sit down still, so that the energy can now have the full opportunity to flow. It is better to sit down so that only the spine remains: the whole body has disappeared, only the spine is there. And the energy can move up through the spine and accumulate in the whole spine.
Next, one should lie down, so that it becomes even easier for the accumulating and upward rising energy, and it begins to hit at the tenth door*. The whole experiment of the Kundalini meditation is about impacting at this tenth door.” Osho
[*Note: The body has nine doors: two eyes, two nostrils, a mouth, two ears, an anus and the sex organ. Our whole life is confined to these doors. The tenth door is the door to the infinite; it is the door of existence. At one end is sex, and at the other end is the tenth door, the crown chakra.]

As part of the Heart and Soul series, each Wednesday we will present a Meditation from the numerous meditation traditions Osho has given us. We want to share and pass on as many of these as possible. Often when Shanti (one of the meditation facilitators of The World of Meditation) would meet with Osho in a darshan, he would introduce to her a meditation technique, asking her to try it out. Her love for experimenting with a variety of techniques continues even to this day.
Each session we will introduce the particular meditation presented. Then we will all do the meditation. There is always time before and after each meditation to ask questions and to just hang out with each other!
